Huckleberry may look odd, but he’s the sweetest cat you’ll ever meet! He came to NTCR because he was scheduled for TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) for a feral colony – except that Huckleberry isn’t feral. His rough exterior is just that because inside he’s a big love. All you have to do is say his name, he’ll meow and start purring and making biscuits. He did require eye surgery to correct entropian, which means the eyelashes were growing towards the eye instead of out. He had a dental and needed many teeth pulled, but that doesn’t stop him from eating. Breakfast time is the BEST [according to Huckleberry] because he gets canned cat food to accompany his crunchy food and fresh water. He is extremely grateful for his food and fresh water! He had a benign cyst on his thumb which was removed, but it doesn’t slow down his expert biscuit-making skills! He adores toys and catnip. I’m not sure he ever had toys or the luxury to feel safe enough to play with toys, but he does now. He acts like a big kitten when playing with them. Huckleberry is still working on his scratching post manners, but is usually a very good boy about using them. He has excellent litterbox manners and does really well with the large, covered litterbox in his foster home. He is fine with the cats in his foster home, but would be happiest either as the only cat or submissive cat – so he gets all the attention. Huckleberry is FIV positive, but if you're not familiar with FIV, it stands for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). It is a virus that is not transmittable to other species and only spread from cat-to-cat via blood - so deep bite wounds. Veterinary medicine has learned a TON about the disease in recent years. It does not negatively affect a cat's life or lifespan nor does it impact their quality of life. Huckleberry is in my home with other cats – FIV+ and FIV- cats – and there are zero issues. The biggest thing Huckleberry needs is a forever home willing to love him and continue giving him the life he deserves. If it’s you, please fill out an application for him.
